AMLakas

is a Philippine FinTech company that offers web-based solutions to clients who require systems to combat financial crime and detect illicit transactions. AMLakas aims to offer affordable and effective tools to companies, such as banks and small remittance companies, that do not otherwise have access to the current, more expensive solutions.

The client wanted an “edgy” logo to stand out from those of Philippine FinTech companies, which are often clean and plain. Describing the style he sought, he stated, “We need more gamers who understand the fight…gamers who can strategize and make life hard for crooks.” I therefore looked at video game iconography for inspiration to design a logo that is modern and engaging.

Using elements of geometry and symmetry, I aimed to create a mark that represented the technical precision of the services AMLakas provides as well as their approachability and easy-to-adopt process. I chose a typeface with a squarish form to give the impression of something digital and futuristic, helping the viewer intuit that this is a tech company. The color blue is used to reinforce this and to catch the viewer’s eye with its striking hue.

While discussing the logo, the Gordian Knot was suggested, as to “cut the Gordian Knot” means to solve an intricate, unsolvable problem. This reflects the company mission.

Overlapping triangles are used to depict a simplified Gordian knot while also outlining the initials, “A.M.L.” (“anti-money laundering”). Appearing tightly knit together, the triangles additionally serve to indicate the security of the services AMLakas provides.
